Sailing at Clapham on the 17th February

After a very cold night a glorious sunny morning with light winds, the only snag was that the pond was two thirds frozen over!. Five of us turned up and it loooked initially as though we would not be able to sail, but Jim got busy with a weight and a piece string to try to break the ice up. Not a great success. By about 11.30 the ice was starting to melt under the heat of the sun and Derek got his 6M on the water in the one third that was clear. Jim and Allan followed and we became adventurous and tried a little ice breaking with the boats, not always successfully I hasten to add, but it was fun. By about 12.00 there was sufficient clear water to sail a short course and as time went on the course was able to get bigger and we ended up sailing almost a full course. By this time it was getting close to lunch time and we adjourned to the Clubhouse for a bite to eat and a cup of tea. Not the best sailing day we have had, but the sun was warm, almost hot, and we enjoyed ourselves. I think those that turned up had fun at least. The next meeting will be on the 2nd March. Derek.
