9 January 2020 – 3rd Sunday of the Month – Six Metre Day

Condition
Cold, sunny. Wind generally north west force 1 to 3.

Those racing from time to time were Leslie, Hugh, Odd and Jim.Wind was light and in the lulls boats were barely moving, sometimes becalmed while others were in wind. Sometimes this element of luck determined the outcome. Nevertheless, the racing was absorbing, 10 races were completed altogether.

Sunday 5 January 2020 – One Metre Day

Conditions

Cold, cloudy, wind force 4 to 5 generally south-westerly.

Those racing from time to time were: Grant, Hugh, Leslie and Jim.

We raced under full rig, but boats were overpowered, hove down onto beams ends at times, and if there was any lack of waterproofing at deck level, taking on water. Hugh had to drain his boat after every race. Grant had to give up sailing his leaky Mallard class, and instead sail his home built Triple Crown which was very dry. Overpowering led to lack of control at times, stalling when trying to tack, or failing to gybe when bows got buried.

However, it all made for stimulating racing, and eight races were completed.

15 December 2019 – 3rd Sunday of the Month – Six Metre Day

Conditions

Cool, sunny with strong glare on the water. Wind generally south west force 3 to 5.

Those racing from time to time were Leslie, Hugh, Grant and Jim.

Wind was variable in strength with boats labouring under the gusts.Hugh found his boat had problems with the conditions and had to retire during the second race. Leslie lent him his boat for two races. There were only 2 boats racing at a time for all but the first race. Leslie’s boat was a casualty from enduring strong winds, as the sheet came off the winch during the last race.

unday 6 October 2019 – One Metre Day

Conditions Mild, cloudy, wind force 3 to 4 generally north north-westerly.Those racing from time to time were: Leslie, Hugh and Jim.

The wind on the pond was coming across the clubhouse bank. Mostly the boats were overpowered on the limit of top rig and nearly uncontrollable at times. Unfortunately the two buoys on the clubhouse bank were blanketed locally: first by the clubhouse, for the starting buoy; and next, for the number one buoy, by a small tree to windward. When a boats became stalled at either of these marks they were left standing, and others slipped past to get a clear lead.

Note for next time with similar winds, shift the number one buoy clear of the windward obstruction of this small tree. Six races were held altogether, ended by a brief shower.
