Vintage Model Yacht Group to visit us

October 1st will see the Vintage Model Yacht Group visit the Long Pond at Clapham. The groups fleet include class racing yachts that date back to the 1880s, as well as non class sailing models and commercial toys from a bygone era. Usually the VMYG and ourselves arrange dates when Clapham members wouldn’t normally be racing. However on this occasion Clapham’s Chairman has agreed to waive our priority, as the VMYG especially asked for October 1st. Members of Clapham will still be racing their International One Metre yachts, and the joint meeting should provide something to interest anyone curious about model yachts.

What a great day of racing!

Conditions were almost perfect today for racing on the Long Pong, and the members who turned up enjoyed close racing, race after race. The wind was a constant force 3 running down the pond at a slight angle. In all, six 6M Class yachts made it to the line for the mornings racing. An early lead was taken by Jack won the majority of races in the morning, closely followed by Graham sailing the chairman’s second boat. During the tea break we experimented with a different start line that would give these larger yachts a clear run for the line, on both port and starboard tack. Before the change, the start line was between the leeward mark and the shore, so there was usually a hustle to start on starboard, in the wind shadow caused by the helms on shore.

Nestling on the edge of Clapham Common, just meters away from the long pond is The Clapham Model Yacht Club. The club has been sailing here since it was founded in 1882. Our small but perfectly formed clubhouse was built by members in 1946 and is the idea place for a cuppa between races. Started for racing wind vane yachts, we now only race Radio Controlled yachts on the first and third Sunday of each month
