Sailing at Clapham on the 16th May.

A great day,s sailing for the 6M,s. Although dull at first, with a few spots of rain, the day improved and with a brisk wind we had some fine sailing. With eight skippers and seven boats the pond was getting to look crowded, we also managed to get in far more races than usual.
Jim V turned up with a 1M but had battery trouble and had to withdraw, but was able to get in a couple of 6M races using Derek,s boat. Hugh was unlucky in that both his boats had problems, one of them having a bad leak which he will have to fix. Grant used Derek,s other boat. John T used his older design HELENE which is proving quite competitive, coming in a winner a couple of times, but the boat to beat was Jim R,s SEISMIC, although is it the boat or the skipper? see comment later.
Results were as follows. Races 1-7 taking place before lunch and races 8-11 after lunch when the fleet was much reduced.
Race 1. Derek, Grant, Alan
Race 2. Jim R, Grant, John T
Race 3. Jim R, Derek, Alan
Race 4. Jim R, Derek, Grant
Race 5. Jim R, Jim V, Grant
Race 6. Jim V sailing Dereks boat, Derek sailing Jim R,s boat,
Race 7. Jim R, Grant, John S
Race 8. John T, Jim R, Grant
Race 9. Derek, Grant, John T
Race 10. John T, Derek, Grant
race 11. Grant, Derek, John T
Race 6 was interesting as Jim V was sailing Derek,s boat and Derek was sailing Jim R,s boat ( no record of who was third in that race unfortunately). It does seem that the skipper is the deciding factor in winning races. In Jim,s hands his boat was a winner, in Derek,s hands it was not so good. I was hoping we could get to see a race between Jim R sailing his boat against Jim V sailing Derek,s boat, but unfortunately Jim V had to leave early. The result of such a race would have been interesting.
A great day,s racing, with more than the usual number of races and a good variety of winners. The next scheduled race day is the 6th june for 1M,s.
NOTE. The following Sunday, the 13th June , is a Vintage Club meeting at the pond
That is all for now. Derek.
