Sailing at Clapham on the 22nd June

We went today (the fourth Sunday in the month) in place of the postponed meeting on the third Sunday when Rookery Road had been closed off as the Common was a starting point for the London to Brighton cycle run. Actually we did not get any sailing in as the wind was so strong and gusty that the 6Ms would have been hard pressed. Ted did have a go but it was hard to tell who was in control of the boat, Ted or the wind. We thought racing in such conditions would have put the boats at risk. I do not think any of the 6m skippers has a second suit of sails. All was not lost however as we used the time to have a clear out in the Clubhouse ready for the SOLING Nationals on the 13th July. We next need to clear the small committee room for use by the race scorer on the day. As has been inferred, the SOLING Nationals is planned to go ahead on the 13th July and we have a dedicated team of RobVice, Jim Vice and a friend in place who have volunteered to organise and run the event for the Club. Many thanks to them. We used todays time to sort out the buoys, frequency board and course board. We seem to have most things in place but will be meeting on the next two Sundays, the 29th June and the 6th July, when we will be sailing the SOLINGs as a test of equipment and organisation. As at this moment I have no information on numbers attending on the 13thJuly but hope to have this within the next few days. I remind Clapham members again that if they want to sail in the Nationals they must have had their boats registered with Graham Reeves and that sail numbers must be displayed on the mainsail in the correct format. These details are shown in the SOLING kit construction notes. The start time of the event and any other details will be posted on the “blog” site as soon as are known. Rob will be at the pond on the 29th June and 6th July to check that all is in place; if you wish to sail in the Nationals I urge that you attend, apart from anything else you will be able to receive invaluable advice from a national and international skipper on rigging and tuneing a boat for maximum performance, I for one will certainly take advantage of this opportunity.

Look forward to seeing you all on the 29th June.  Derek.
