The second ever Soling 1 Meter National Championship took place at Bournville lake on July 14th. Eight boats entered with 5 from the host club and John Meredith from the Burton club, Lisa Reeves from the Birkenhead and Mark Dicks from Clapham. Not a particular good entry, but better than the full size Soling Nationals which only attracted 5 boats on the same day
Wind was better than average at Bournville and racing got under way at 10-45 am. Both Mark Dicks and Dave Nickson had electrical problems at the start. Marks boat was able to be rectified but Dave’s boat needed more attention than was possible at the lakeside.
After various tea and lunch breaks racing concluded at 3.00pm.
12 races were sailed and allowing 3 discards Mark Dicks was the clear winner with 6 firsts and 3 seconds giving a total score of 12 points. Not bad for someone who had never sailed a Soling 1 Meter before. Mark purchased two Solings on the day and is now busily building one for himself and one for his son Joshua. Joshua is the 4th generation of the Dicks family to take up the sport. This must be a record.
The final results were :-
1st Mark Dicks 12 points
2nd John Newey 19 points
3rd Peter Martin 28 points
4th John Meredith 30 points

Bearing in mind these boats were manufactured in California’ it was appropriate to present Californian wine as prizes for the first 4 boats.
A profit of £10.00 was made at the event which was donated to the RNLI .
Finally a vote of thanks was made to Mike Harris who acted as race officer for the day and a bottle of wine was presented to lubricate the vocal chords..
